Because of the close relationship between the upper teeth and the sinus, an opening is sometimes left after surgery or sinus lift with graft. In order to avoid rupture of the sinus membrane and loss of the graft please adhere strictly to instructions below:
- Take prescriptions as directed (additional nasal and oral decongestants may be recommended after sinus surgery)
- Do not spit for several days.
- Do not smoke for several days.
- Do not use a straw for several days.
- Do not forcefully blow your nose for at least two weeks
- Try not to sneeze; it will cause pressure. If you must, sneeze with your mouth open.
- Eat soft foods for several days. Try to chew on the opposite side as much as possible.
- Do not rinse vigorously for several days.
Additional Instructions for Sinus Surgery (Use only if specifically recommended by Dr. Thousand):
- If recommended by Dr. Thousand, use oxymetazoline nasal spray (Afrin) twice per day for the first three days after your surgery. Do not inhale forcefully.
- If recommended by Dr. Thousand, consume a decongestant containing pseudoephedrine once or twice (follow manufacturers guidelines) per day for the first seven days after your surgery.
Slight bleeding from the nose for several days is not uncommon.
